The grammar pattern "(question word) + か" is used to form a question in Japanese.
The question word can be something like "who," "what," "where," "when," "why," "how," etc.
By adding "か" at the end of the question word, you are essentially turning a statement into a question.
For example, if you have the statement "彼は学生です" (Kare wa gakusei desu) meaning "He is a student," you can turn it into a question by adding "か" at the end of "学生" to get "彼は学生ですか" (Kare wa gakusei desu ka) meaning "Is he a student?"
